The current state of our country had me pretty messed up this past July 4th weekend. I kept thinking about how America was built on the blood, sweat and tears—and free labor—of my ancestors. I wasn’t feeling very celebratory on the 250th birthday of these divided states.
Then a group of girlfriends staying at our Philadelphia Bed & Breakfast reminded me through their joy that this land was made for you and me, and nobody, nothing, should stand in the way of anyone else’s pursuit of happiness and wholeness.
These six old friends traveled from various cities to be with one another for a “Star-Spangled Sisterhood Weekend,” as they called it. One of them, April Hill, a travel consultant, curated their entire experience, which included meals at some of the city’s most delicious Black-owned restaurants, a visit to the astonishing The Colored Girls Museum, a wine blending class at Black, woman-owned ᴠɪɴᴏ ʙᴀᴍʙɪɴᴏ ᴡɪɴᴇʀʏ, and in-room massages during their stay at Akwaaba, care of Tree Of Zen, a traveling spa service led by our girl Lanez, who we’re proud to partner with. Our fabulous Philly innkeeper, Jannell, got in on the act by serving up stellar hospitality along with a red, white and blue celebration cake and themed-appropriate refreshments.
Says travel pro April: This weekend was all about rest, sisterhood, culture and connection.
