Happy fall, y'all! No filter needed on another gorgeous early autumn day. Today we are working on beautiful vintage Italian road bikes for this guy with the contagious smile.
Joe found me like a lot of you do: by my listings flooding facebook marketplace, of course! He does a lot of his own work and has great taste in all things vintage Italian.
The Casati has been made L'Eroica ready! For those who may not know, this is a period-correct mixed surface ride along the most picturesque pavé in Italy. EVERYTHING has to be pre-1987 tech - even your jersey and bibs!
This marks the second vintage Italian road bike I've made L'Eroica-ready! Keep em comin'!
Joe is such a good guy, he's like, "hey give this (absolutely flawless) Gios a once-over while I'm in Italy? Give it an /extended/ test ride? See you mid next month!"

We are absolutely cranking here in late summer. All of a sudden, my custom build schedule started running considerably deep. I'm a busy boi, and grateful to be!
Atreyu! - Yea, like the literary protagonist in The Neverending Story - He wanted a fixed gear. Of course a literary protagonist, having lost his horse, Artax, in the Swamps of Sadness wants, nay NEEDS a track bike - the continued existence for the whole of Fantasia depends on it!
And like so many lately, Atreyu depends on ME to finish this bike! And, let me tell you, dear reader, this was a nail biter. Not because fixed gear is inherently more dangerous than a bike with say, hand operated brakes, but because we are seemingly slowly being consumed by THE NOTHING - a slightly hyperbolic nickname I gave "supply chain issues" - wtf is up with the mail lately??
Well, the all important component to create a laser-straight chain line between crank and wheel arrived just in time and yours truly installed said important component, quadruple checked every checkable aspect and, for the first time since maybe 2009, I rode brakeless fixed up and down a road a few times to give ol' "Artax mk.ii" a shakedown sesh.
Atreyu is very pleased, though the seriousness of his station as literary protagonist would never allow him to betray the ear to ear smile I know he secretly wanted to. Stay clear of the swamp and ride on, Atreyu. May your journey be met with not but the fairest of winds and not but the following-est of seas.

In an almost certainly foolish effort to CATALOG IT ALL, here are 5 of the 50+ framesets in the Red Star barn. A lot of the inquiries this summer have led me to shuffling around the nearly unnavigable portions of the barn and taking very poor quality pictures. The plan is to simply catalog what I've got and be able to forward inquiries to this album - and become less likely to (further) break myself in the process.

Jesse reminds me of me when I was a relatively new Dad to my now 8-year old daughter. It didn't take much for me to reflect on what riding with a cranium-heavy toddler on a front portage device that, while arguably wacky looking, is the ONLY way (barring a far superior Dutch box bike/ bakfiets) to take offspring on memorable, 2-wheeled vision quests.
Growing up in the early 80s, there was only the kind that looked like a torture device and provided only a grand vista of Mom's mid-back region, clad in none but the finest Filene's Basement active wear department could supply.
This Thule Yepp thingy... "Man I wish I had that as a kid," Jesse and I both agreed. The seat and seat back are one big, forgiving, perforated sheet of blue foam that conforms to Junior like his or hers own hybrid captain's chair/ hammock. Far from the torture devices of yore.
What pairs well with a front portage option? In my experience: ease of mount/dismount, best afforded by a step-thru frame design so you can keep the bike steady and concentrate on keeping your kid safe rather than throwing a leg over a top tube without tipping the top-heavy bike over.
Some other stuff: cockpit setup for upright riding without crowding the precious cargo, loud bell to politely signal other rail trail users, double leg kickstand, rear rack and very large capacity insulated trunk bag that will instantly become a glorified diaper bag.
