Our summers are usually spent in remote National Forest Service campgrounds, where wildlife is prevalent. Our winter gig is at a resort in Texas. The most exotic animal we've seen is a hairless cat, until the rooster and his hen tried to check in.
They just wandered in. I should point out that we are in the middle of San Antonio. The girls in the office reached out to many organizations. The Humane society said they would take them with a donation of $140. This morning we dropped them off at their own resort in the country, they must have just taken a wrong turn somewhere.

There's nothingthing like a late afternoon Christmas day paddle. This was our first time at Guadalupe River State Park since the floods this past summer. There was evidence of the raging river all along the banks and up in the trees. We had most of this stretch of the river to ourselves and the local wildlife.

Day 4 was our longest so far at 377 miles. It was nice to stay the night somewhere familiar. The trees have grown so much in the past 4 years. It was a wonderful night. The only thing that would have made it better was if the friends we made when we worked here were here with us. Lots of great memories.

Day 3 on the road was great. We met up with our very first work camping boss for lunch and caught up and then finished our jaunt through most of Idaho. However, last night was a flop. Its the first time I felt let down by Harvest Hosts. The location was very heavy with the aroma of manure (not a deal breaker for us). It was the flies. SO MANY FLIES. And it definitely wasnt a one time thing. The restaurant where you check in has forced air when the door opens to keep the flies out. It felt like we were going into an airlock in a time machine and getting shot out into an old western bar. The sidewalk in front of the door was covered in thousands of flies who couldn't pass through and died trying. Our rig was easy for the flies. Every time we opened the door, none left, but another dozen came in. The outside of the RV looked like it was moving. Im not looking forward to todays drive. Im pretty sure there's at least 2 dozen flies waiting to greet us. Oh well, we slept well and today is another day.

First day back on the road. We traveled 217 miles today. Our first nights stay is at a Harvest Host site. We had a lovely dinner and they gave us a nice gift as we left the restaurant. We're totally not used to these temperatures, so we are anxious for the temps to start dropping tonight.

Its the end of the summer season and we have started our slow roll towards San Antonio, TX. This is only the second time in 7 years of camphosting that we haven't wanted to leave at the end of the season. The other time was at the end of our first camphosting job at Cabins By The Joe in Avery, ID. We've had an amazing summer. After months of traveling at 25mph on mountainous forest service roads, 60+ mph and traffic seems alien. We're also not ready for light pollution and big city noise and traffic.But we're ramping up for our Christmas Tree season. I'll end this post with some of our favorite moments at Takhlakh Lake and the majesty of Mount Adams.

Its amazing the change in the campground when there's liquid sunshine. We have 54 sites and right now only 3 are occupied,. It feels like a ghost town. To be fair, it's 48 degrees outside, raining, and the forecast has a low of 34 degrees tonight. We still show 8 more arrivals today. This is the slowest our campground has been all season.

Our campground closes on 9/21. We're working on any repairs we can make, painting our site numbers, and making lists of repairs, like the picnic tables that are propped up by stumps. Some will be done at the end of the season, after we leave. And some will be done before we open next summer. This is a higher elevation campground, so it has a short season. It's only open from 7/5 to 9/21.

What we've learned after our second National Forest Camphosting season.
1) We need lithium batteries for the RV.
2) Starlink is an electricity vampire.
3) Its no fun when you run out of water.
We have solar and a great spot to collect sunlight but our batteries struggle. We discovered that Starlink was a big draw so it is disconnected more than its connected (which is fine with us). We haul our water (40 gallons) back on days that we take trash down the mountain, on average 2x a week. We've only had one time that we ran out, which was not fun. It has made us more aware of our water consumption. Our plants now only get lake water. Will we do this again? Absolutely! We love the views, the fresh air, getting to meet so many y people from so many different parts of the world and feeling like we're making an impact on such a beautiful campground.
