🐍 BABY COPPERHEAD SEASON IS HERE!

Late summer into early fall is a common time to encounter newborn copperheads — and at only several inches long, they can be incredibly easy to overlook.

One of the easiest features to notice on a young copperhead is the bright yellow or yellow-green tip on the tail. They also have the classic copperhead pattern: dark, hourglass-shaped bands that are narrow across the back and wider down the sides.

That bright tail tip is used as a lure to attract small prey and typically fades as the snake gets older.

⚠️ Remember: baby copperheads are venomous, but they are NOT more venomous or “more dangerous” simply because they’re babies. That’s a common myth.

When hiking, working around the yard, moving firewood, or stepping around rocks and fallen leaves, take an extra second to look before putting your hands or feet somewhere you can’t clearly see.

If you encounter one, give it space and leave it alone. Most bites occur when a snake is accidentally stepped on, disturbed, or intentionally handled.
