Kentucky Equine Research presented new findings at the International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology (ICEEP) in Tokyo, Japan, last week.

Presentations included various areas of study, including fatty acid profiles and antioxidant status in high-performance horses as well as post-exercise cooling protocols and muscle recovery.

Joe Pagan, Ph.D., founder and president of Kentucky Equine Research, gave a keynote address at the conference.

Ashley Fowler, Ph.D., Ryon Springer, Ph.D., and Pagan presented the original research.

Could nutrition play a role in supporting your horse’s skin health?

Recurring skin issues can be especially challenging for horses with PPID living in hot, humid climates, where warm, moist conditions favor fungal growth.

We’re back with another Weigh-To-Win recap!

Let’s take a look at some highlights from the Hagyard Midsouth Three Day Event & Team Challenge.

Over four days, 64 horses were weighed, and half of the participants underestimated their horses’ weight. Our grand prize winner guessed her horse’s exact weight!

Beyond the contest, Weigh-To-Win gave us the opportunity to connect with horse owners, discuss their horses’ nutrition programs, and highlight the importance of accurate weight measurements when making feeding decisions.

As part of our sponsorship, we also presented “From Novice to Advanced: Understanding Energy Demands for Event Horses.” The talk explored how nutritional requirements can change as horses progress through the levels of eventing, helping competitors better understand the energy demands of their horses.

Are all omega-3 fatty acids created equally?

Not all omega-3 sources provide the same fatty acids. ALA, EPA, and DHA are the three main forms of omega-3s, and while the body can convert ALA to EPA and DHA, this process is inefficient in mammals.

For this reason, the source of omega-3 supplementation matters. Fish oil provides EPA and DHA directly, while plant sources such as flaxseed and chia are rich in ALA.
It is also important to consider the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as both play roles in immune function and cell membrane structure.

Can fish oil help reduce airway inflammation in horses?

Purdue University researchers found that fish oil supplementation benefited horses with neutrophilic asthma even without reducing dust exposure.

In a study of 80 clinically healthy Thoroughbred racehorses, horses received either an omega-3 fatty acid supplement or corn oil for four weeks. Neutrophils, a type of inflammatory white blood cell, decreased significantly in horses receiving the omega-3 supplement. As a secondary finding, measures of athletic performance also increased in supplemented horses.

Reducing dust exposure remains an important part of managing equine asthma, but this research provides additional insight into the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.
