The three houses on Kilauea Volcano are all neighbors on a small lane running through the residential historic district of Volcano Village, just outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The house on Mauna Kea Volcano, "Io's Nest", is situated in a remote location overlooking the Hamakua Coast.

Yesterday I posted about finding piles of tiny bones in lava tubes, and today I show you the culprits -- the Barn Owls who roost in the nooks and crannies of the lava walls throughout the Big Island of Hawaii... Continuing down this morning's rabbit hole, here are two USGS aerial images (in the public domain) that emphasize how much Kilauea Caldera has filled -- and highlight the fact that the piece of Crater Rim Drive that fell into the caldera in 2018 (circled in red in top photo) has recently been submerged in new lava. Those of us who have watched the Kilauea eruptions for a long time know that the piece of Crater Rim Drive that fell into the caldera during the 2018 collapse is a major landmark as we watch the level of the lava rise. In this comparison I show my photos from the most recent Episode 54 eruption compared to the Episode 14 eruption in March of 2025 (bottom photo) from approximately the same vantage point -- and I've marked the road segment with a red arrow. Just a few days before Hurricane Lala hit Hawaii and we lost power and internet for an extended period of time, Kilauea Volcano erupted with Episode 53 and I didn't quite have time to go through all my photos. So here is a small look back in time to August 12 when the eruption coincided with the sunset as I was walking the perimeter trails and catching glimpses of the tall North Vent fountain through the forest.

What a difference a year makes! On the left is my photo of Kilauea Volcano's Episode 32 on 2 Sept 2025, and on the right is our most recent Episode 54 from approximately the same viewpoint. The vents are really raising themselves in elevation as the caldera fills with lava from the ongoing eruptions that began on 23 Dec 2024, giving us fantastic views from all locations around the edge of Kilauea Caldera.
After a slow start, the volcano's summit magma reservoir is reinflating nicely since the last episode, indicating that we will indeed have another eruption soon! The USGS has announced a tentative forecast window of September 7-12 for Episode 55 🌋 here in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park!

Yesterday, knowing that Highway 11 had reopened through Ka'u district of the Big Island of Hawaii, Todd and I headed to Costco in Kona to get supplies before the passage of Hurricane Lowell to our south. The devastation from the recent Hurricane Lala was shocking -- just imagining the force that would create such havoc. We stopped to check out the little chapel on the hill above Punalu'u, and drove by the Punalu'u Bake Shop in Na'alehu and our former dentist's office on Kaalaiki Road -- all suffering some degree of ruination. It doesn't look as though Hurricane Lowell will affect us much on its current route, so perhaps Hawaiian Telcom will manage to restore our Internet today -- it's been 18 days since it went out during Hurricane Lala...

It's September! If you have my 2026 calendar you'll see the sunrise eruption of Kilauea's Episode 33 from 19 Sept of last year, as viewed from the Steaming Bluff. Hopefully we'll have a September eruption this month so that I can construct my 2027 calendar -- it's almost time to start working on it. The reinflation of Kilauea's summit magma chamber has been unprecedentedly slow since the end of our recent Episode 54, so the next episode is an uncertainty.

We finally gave up on waiting for Hawaiian Telcom to restore our Internet service here in Volcano Village following Hurricane Lala and retrieved the Starlink setup from our rooftop in Papa'aloa -- so now I'm able to access more of my photos from Kilauea's Episode 54 eruption on 25 August (that already seem like old news). Here are a few more scenes from my wanderings around the caldera, from the summit overlook at Uekahuna and on to the Crater Rim Trail, Halema'uma'u Trail, and Byron Ledge Trail (where I tripped hard and ended my photoshoot 😜 but I'm fine now).

Kilauea Volcano's Episode 54 eruption on 25 August 2026 on the Big Island of Hawaii produced a fabulous fan-shaped fountain of about 500 feet in height. The day was extremely windy, but in this video I managed to find a sheltered spot, crouching within the foliage, where I was able to record the sound of the eruption without the overwhelming sound of the wind.
