The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust is looking for a new co-Chair to join its Board of Trustees.

Last winter we planted 182,500 trees by hand!

These trees are a mixture of new woodland creation, restock of clear felled sites, underplanting existing stands of trees and replacing trees that were planted in previous planting seasons that have not survived.

There is no easy way to plant trees, it has to be done in winter no matter the weather, and amazingly is done by just a handful of dedicated people.

Every year our planting numbers change as we adapt our management to each site and its conditions, choosing to plant the right tree for the right place for the right reason.

The trees we plant today will grow in an ever changing climate so we must choose trees that will be resilient. Balancing the need to produce sustainable timber, provide the right habitat for wildlife and be resilient to pests and diseases.

🌱 A carpet of oak seedlings… but only a few will grow into trees

After a previous bumper acorn year, thousands of tiny oaks are now sprouting across the forest. But this is nature playing the long game.

Many will be eaten, shaded out, or simply won’t survive the summer. Only a small number will make it through to become the next generation of trees.

It’s how oak woodlands have renewed themselves for centuries, producing far more than they need, so that some can succeed.

In some areas, we’re giving these young trees a helping hand by protecting them from browsing with fencing.
