We're over halfway through October and the leaves are still playing hide-and-seek! The beginnings of some beautiful red, gold, and orange can be seen from our porch, but there's still plenty of green that will be turning in the upcoming weeks.

That means the last week of October into the first week of November is the perfect time to visit the mountains! The crowds are smaller, and the foliage will be at its most vibrant.

If you thought you missed leaf season, or just want to experience it again, we still have rooms available. Come stay awhile, enjoy good food, great hospitality, and the crisp beauty of the autumn season.

As autumn seeps into the mountains and the breeze turns crisp, the Smokies dress in vibrant copper, scarlet, and gold. The hearth is lit and hearts are full as we gather together to enjoy good company and admire creation in all its splendor. Fall is a magical time - a little cozy, a little cold, and always a little shorter than we’d like.

While October brings our peak colors, the magic here keeps right on going. November offers quiet, peaceful mountain trails and late-season leaves, while December brings crackling fires, festive charm, and clear winter views as we deck the inn for Christmas.

If you’re planning a fall getaway or bringing the family for the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Polar Express, our Private Cottages and The House at Hemlock Inn offer your family a cozy home of their own in the mountains. You'll enjoy full kitchens or kitchenettes, private porch space, and roomy living areas, with all the beauty and tranquility of the main inn grounds just steps away.

When evening comes, gather with us around our traditional Lazy Susan tables for warm, home-cooked dinners served family-style. Afterward, settle in by the hearth with a warm mug of coffee or hot chocolate.

We still have cottage and room openings for late October, November, and December; the perfect time to put down the screens, slow down, and enjoy the simple warmth of the mountains.

The Lure of Fall in the Mountains

In her book Wither, Lauren DeStefano wrote: “Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.”

Between late September and mid-November, the mountains take on a whole new aura. Lush green leaves and fresh flowers give way to magnificent colors, or as my sister’s college roommate once put it, “It’s like the mountains are covered by a bag of M&Ms.” The summer heat fades into comfortably crisp weather, and crackling fire in our fireplace becomes a cozy staple during breakfast and dinner.

The transformation begins in late September as dogwoods and early hardwoods start to turn. October grows more vibrant and beautiful each passing day. In recent years, as milder temperatures persist later in the season, we have enjoyed stunning color all the way through mid-November. It is the most popular time of year here.

We still have some rooms available, but we suggest making your reservations now to ensure you have a front-row seat for this spectacular season.

Things to do this Fall:

• Hiking: A timeless favorite for mountain visitors, with over 800 miles of scenic trails waiting to be explored in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
• Fishing: Excellent fishing abounds throughout the area, including 800 miles of wild trout streams filled with rainbow, brown, and native brook trout.
• Sightseeing: There is no better place to take in the breathtaking colors than the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You will find endless panoramic views throughout the park, as well as along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Cherohala Skyway.
• Darnell Farms: Located just a couple of miles from Hemlock Inn, Darnell Farms has something fun going on. They regularly host folk and bluegrass festivals, a corn maze, and tractor rides to the pumpkin patch making it a wonderful spot for family fun.

Looking Ahead:

• The Polar Express: The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad begins its magical Polar Express rides in early November. This event is extremely popular and sells out quickly, so make your reservations today! Hemlock Inn will remain open through December and has rooms available for this fun family tradition.
• Christmas at Hemlock: We love Christmas, and we deck the inn with traditional Christmas decor, including a live 10-foot tree. Our close proximity to the Polar Express, warm family atmosphere, and home-cooked meals make the inn the perfect setting for your holiday getaway.

For almost 40 years, Mort and Lainey White have welcomed guests to share in family-style meals, quiet mountain mornings, and classic Southern hospitality. Through the decades of welcoming old friends and new faces, the stories of Hemlock Inn have been preserved on paper.

In More Than A Place, Mort shares his life as an innkeeper, the story of his family, and the history of the inn alongside his personal experiences. This followed his first book, Father Innkeeper, which is a collection of blog posts spanning 2009–2024 that his three sons compiled for him as a Father's Day gift.

Our cookbook, Recipes from Our Front Porch, also carries its own special history. Originally written by Lainey's mother, Ella Jo Shell, it was later revised and published in its third edition by Lainey. Inside, you will find all of the recipes served around our tables, alongside memories and history from Lainey's perspective.

Together, these books offer a way to carry the warmth, spirit, and memories of the inn home with you. Hemlock Inn has always been shaped by the stories shared within, and we invite you to come sit a while, stay, and be part of our next chapter.

Growing up, September was always a quiet, peaceful haven amid the rush of life. After the whirlwind of new schedules, alarm clocks, and busy weekdays, September weekends felt safe and welcoming. There is something special about watching the seasons flow across the ridges of the Smoky Mountains. Throughout the year, the window in our sunroom captures the ever-changing painting of the mountains, making it one of the best places to sit, relax, and take in God's creation.

In spring, the wildflowers bloom and a soft wash of green covers the hills. Summer brings long, lazy afternoons, cool breezes, and dancing fireflies. In fall, the mountains are painted vibrant reds, oranges, and golds as the leaves change. Come winter, a quiet peace settles over the ridges, and snow dusts the mountain tops.
