Guarding the mouth of Beaufort Inlet stands a five sided brick fortress that has watched over the North Carolina coast for nearly two centuries. 🧱 In the spring of 1862, Fort Macon became the stage for one of the state's most dramatic sieges.

Confederate troops held the fort early in the Civil War, but Union General Ambrose Burnside had other plans as part of his campaign along the Carolina sounds. Federal forces landed on Bogue Banks, dragged heavy siege guns across the sand, and on April 25, 1862, opened a thunderous bombardment. Newly ranged rifled cannon fire tore into the old masonry with an accuracy the fort's builders never imagined. Within a single day the Confederate garrison was forced to surrender.

The fall of Fort Macon handed the Union control of Beaufort harbor for the rest of the war and became part of the slow tightening of the blockade around the Confederacy. Today the fort is a state park, its brick corridors and grassy ramparts open to anyone willing to imagine the smoke and noise of that April morning. ⚓

There is something humbling about standing where those walls took fire. If you have ever walked the ramparts at Fort Macon, what stayed with you most?

Just a quick note to everyone… it’s preferred that you not add water to the pool and just let our pool contractor handle that, but if you decide it’s necessary, please set a timer as a reminder to turn the water supply off and not let the pool overflow. Too much water making the pool overflow can cause serious damage. We had a neighbors pool overflow when their guest decided to add water and then left the place at the end of their vacation with the water running !! Thank you and have a happy vacation season !
