Last call for PumpkinFest weekend. After today, we can’t promise anything.

Old Crow Medicine Show is tonight, PumpkinFest is Saturday, and our remaining sites are going fast.

This is the weekend Franklin has been building toward all month. Old Crow Medicine Show takes the stage tonight at 7:30 PM at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts, and the 30th Annual PumpkinFest fills downtown Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Add in fall color that’s moving down the mountains right on schedule, and it’s easy to see why this is one of our busiest weekends of the year. If you’ve been on the fence, today is the day to decide. A Bartram Trail hike that’s perfect for a crisp October morning.

The Bartram Trail winds right through the Franklin area, and one of its most popular day hikes starts at the Wallace Branch Trailhead and climbs toward William’s Pulpit. It’s a real mountain climb, not a stroll, but October is the ideal time to tackle it. The air is cool, the hardwoods are turning, and the views open up as you gain elevation.

This is the same trail network The Naturalist runners raced earlier this month, just at a much friendlier pace. Mountain weather changes quickly this time of year, so pack layers and water, wear sturdy shoes, and check trail and weather conditions before you head out. Then come back to your site for a well-deserved dinner outside.

Everything you need to know about the 30th Annual PumpkinFest.

Franklin’s biggest street festival takes over historic downtown this Saturday, October 17, from 9 AM to 4 PM. The star of the show is the World Famous Pumpkin Roll, where folks of all ages send their pumpkins racing down the hill to see whose goes the farthest. Yes, you should bring a pumpkin.

There’s also a costume parade and contest for kids and dogs, nearly 120 vendors, mountain arts and crafts, and plenty of festival food. It’s free to attend and happens rain or shine.

Our tips: get downtown early, since parking fills fast; wear comfortable shoes; and leave room in the day to browse the downtown shops.

Old Crow Medicine Show brings its high-energy mix of old-time music, folk, bluegrass, and Americana to the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts, 1028 Georgia Road, on Thursday, October 15 at 7:30 PM. Five tips for driving the mountains this October, rig or no rig.

1) On long downhill grades, downshift and let the engine help slow you, rather than riding your brakes the whole way.

2) Use pullouts to let traffic pass and to grab your photos; never stop in a travel lane for a view.

3) Wet leaves get slick, so give yourself extra following distance on shaded curves.

4) Cool mornings drop tire pressure, so check your PSI before you roll out.

5) Our favorite tip: leave the big rig parked at your site and take the tow vehicle or toad for scenic drives.

Narrow, winding forest roads are a lot more fun in a smaller vehicle, and your site will be right here waiting when you get back.

Waiting for the "perfect" peak weekend? You may not need to.

Leaves change first at the highest elevations, and then the color slides downhill into the valleys as October rolls along. That's great news for anyone planning a trip to Franklin, because with all the elevation changes around us, there's usually good color somewhere for weeks, not just one weekend. Early in the month, head up high for the first bursts of red and gold. By mid-month, the forested byways and ridgelines are in full swing. Late in October, the trees right here in the valley and along the rivers join the show. So instead of chasing a single forecast, pick the dates that work for you, and we'll help you figure out where to point the car.

As we wrap up September, we're already looking forward to one of Franklin's biggest traditions. PumpkinFest turns 30 this year and rolls into downtown Franklin on Saturday, October 17, featuring the World Famous Pumpkin Roll, a costume parade and contest, over 120 vendors, and all the fall festival energy you could ask for.

It's one of the region's largest street festivals, and we'll have all the details as it gets closer. For now, thank you for an amazing September, we can't wait to see what October brings.
