An unmade bed at an vacation rental? 😳

Hear us out.

We love great design. We’re just not convinced great design has to stay perfectly styled to be beautiful.

Wrinkled linen. A book left open. Boots by the door. A coffee cup that’s clearly on round two.

Those little signs of life might actually be when a space looks its best.

At The Milky WayFarer, we designed the house to be lived in, not tiptoed around. And somewhere along the way, we started thinking about the unmade bed as less of a mess and more like evidence of a really good morning.

We wrote a whole blog post about it: Imperfect by Design: The Art of the Unmade Bed.

Fair warning: it may make you feel considerably better about not making your bed today.

Marfa has a dress code. Nobody wrote it down. It’s denim.

This is me breaking it, for one afternoon, in a full Canadian tux. It seemed funny at the time. It was funny at the time.

Vaqueros, James Dean, Donald Judd, and a fictional oilman played by Daniel Day-Lewis have all quietly worn the same pants in this town for 150 years. Not one of them in a Canadian tux. New blog post, link in bio.

Apparently Marfa has a dress code.

Nobody bothered to write it down. 👖

Cowboys and cowgirls. Vaqueros and vaqueras. Ranchers. Artists. Movie stars. Donald Judd. Locals. Visitors. And, apparently, one guy willing to take the Canadian tuxedo all the way to a denim cowboy hat.

The more I looked into it, the more I realized blue jeans have been a common thread running through very different versions of Marfa for generations.

And maybe that’s part of why this Texas kid has always felt pretty comfortable here.

Coming soon: Marfa Has a Dress Code. Nobody Wrote It Down.

Our Leave a Book, Take a Book shelf has been popular.

Very popular.

Let’s just say the “taking” has been slightly outpacing the “leaving.” So, we called in literary reinforcements from Seattle.

You can see four books in the photo. There’s a small library hiding underneath them, courtesy of my sister and brother-in-law’s bookstore, Paper Boat Booksellers

Consider the WayFarer restocked and ready for its next plot twist. 📚

How does a West Texas town of about 2,000 people, with no stoplights, end up as one of the most important contemporary art destinations in the world?

We had questions.

So we went down the rabbit hole—from Donald Judd arriving with a truck full of art and a stubborn idea, to Chinati, Ballroom Marfa, Prada Marfa, and eventually generative art on the blockchain.

This is our take on how Marfa became Marfa.
Spoiler: like most things out here, the answer is a little strange, surprisingly complicated, and probably involves a long drive.

Some people pack for Marfa. Some people pack… optimistically.

If your toothbrush is still sitting on your bathroom counter 500 miles away, don’t panic. We’ve got a basket stocked with the little things that somehow become very big things when you’re in the middle of the West Texas desert.

Toothpaste? ✔️
Contact solution? ✔️
Deodorant? ✔️
Dental floss? ✔️
Feminine care? ✔️
…and that’s just to name a few.

Basically, if you forgot it, there’s a decent chance we’ve already thought about it.

Because the only thing you should be wondering about in Marfa is the lights not where to buy a toothbrush. 🌵✨

A former NASA engineer spent years trying to explain the Marfa Lights. His findings are genuinely incredible.

But after hosting guests here for years, we’ve come to believe the real mystery isn’t the lights at all.

One of our favorite tiny details.

Custom retro-orange bedside power bricks with outlets, USB-A, and USB-C—ready for phones, watches, mystery cords, and the charger you definitely forgot at home.

Marfa already asks enough of you. Your battery percentage shouldn’t be one of them.

This Lab knew. Bring the dog to Marfa.

New on the blog: a guide to visiting Marfa with your four-legged person. Fenced yard, dog park near Larry’s, a town that welcomes them as warmly as you. Plus for handmade leashes, single-ingredient treats, and meal toppers worth the detour.

Even better in person, they really pop.

Version two of our wildly successful postcards are officially live. Somewhere between desert dust, good light, and a little Marfa magic, they came out even better than we hoped.

Big thank you to for the creativity, collaboration, and for helping us make sure our guests leave with something better than just a sunburn and a mysterious urge to move to Marfa.
