We’ve spent the last hundred years making everything faster.

Then we drive seven hours to Marfa so we can waste some time.

Beautifully.

Plans change. Restaurants close. Records require flipping. Coffee can take unnecessarily long to make. Sometimes the wind even carries the smell of Bordo baking bread across the road while you sit outside doing absolutely nothing.
And maybe that’s the point.

Our latest story is about leaving a little white space in your Marfa itinerary and letting Marfa figure out what to do with the rest.

One of our favorite West Texas pastimes: heading up to McDonald Observatory for a Star Party, where the telescopes are enormous, the skies are impossibly dark, and everyone politely pretends they spotted Saturn first. 🔭✨

The best outdoor game you’ve never played might be Finnish, but it feels right at home in Marfa.

Meet Mölkky: toss a wooden pin, knock down numbered skittles, and race to exactly 50 points. Go over 50 and you’re knocked back to 25, which is a very Finnish way of saying, don’t get cocky.

Easy to learn. Surprisingly strategic. Best enjoyed in the backyard with a cold drink, a little West Texas sunshine, and at least one person taking it far too seriously.

An unmade bed at an vacation rental? 😳

Hear us out.

We love great design. We’re just not convinced great design has to stay perfectly styled to be beautiful.

Wrinkled linen. A book left open. Boots by the door. A coffee cup that’s clearly on round two.

Those little signs of life might actually be when a space looks its best.

At The Milky WayFarer, we designed the house to be lived in, not tiptoed around. And somewhere along the way, we started thinking about the unmade bed as less of a mess and more like evidence of a really good morning.

This is me breaking it, for one afternoon, in a full Canadian tux. It seemed funny at the time. It was funny at the time.

Vaqueros, James Dean, Donald Judd, and a fictional oilman played by Daniel Day-Lewis have all quietly worn the same pants in this town for 150 years. Not one of them in a Canadian tux. New blog post, link in bio.

Apparently Marfa has a dress code.

Nobody bothered to write it down. 👖

Cowboys and cowgirls. Vaqueros and vaqueras. Ranchers. Artists. Movie stars. Donald Judd. Locals. Visitors. And, apparently, one guy willing to take the Canadian tuxedo all the way to a denim cowboy hat.

The more I looked into it, the more I realized blue jeans have been a common thread running through very different versions of Marfa for generations.

And maybe that’s part of why this Texas kid has always felt pretty comfortable here.

Let’s just say the “taking” has been slightly outpacing the “leaving.” So, we called in literary reinforcements from Seattle.
