Some weekends stay with you. 🤍

This was one of them.

A beautiful couple, a beautiful family, and a weekend filled with so much love. By the time everyone packed up and headed home, it didn’t feel like we had simply hosted a wedding at Captain Nickels Inn. It felt like we had spent the weekend with family.

And really, that is exactly what Tony and I hoped for when we opened the doors to this home.

We wanted to share this special place. To fill the rooms with families and friends. To see children running through the flowers, loved ones gathering by the bay, and couples beginning a new chapter surrounded by the people who mean the most to them.

We wanted to make room for more family, more celebrations, more memories and more love.

Looking through these photographs, that is exactly what we see. And we feel incredibly lucky that, for one beautiful weekend, we got to be a small part of it.

Thank you for trusting us with such a special time in your lives. You will always be part of the Captain Nickels Inn family. 🤍

🦅 A Captain’s Suite visitor…

One of our guests staying in the Captain’s Suite captured this incredible close-up of one of the eagles that frequently visits Captain Nickels Inn.

We see our eagles often soaring over Penobscot Bay, perched in the trees along the property, or making their way past the shoreline, but seeing them this close never gets old.

And what a view from the Captain’s Suite. ❤️

Thank you to our guest for sharing these beautiful photos with us. These are the little moments that make life on the Maine coast so special.

Summer is beginning to wind down at Captain Nickels inn.🍂

What a summer it has been.

Our first summer as innkeepers brought more than we ever could have imagined. We watched whales swim just offshore, eagles soar over the property, deer wander across the lawn, foxes make themselves at home, and blue herons visit the shoreline. We filled the gardens with flowers, served countless breakfasts, welcomed guests from near and far, and had all three of our children here with us for part of the season.

Now the mornings are starting to feel just a little crisper, the days are getting a little shorter, and we’re already preparing the inn for fall.

The first mums have arrived, we’re dreaming up fall breakfasts and seasonal treats, and we keep looking at the trees wondering which one will be the first to change.

After more than 25 years away from a true New England autumn, this will be our first fall in Maine. We have a feeling we’re going to love it.

Summer, you have been very good to us. But we’re ready to see what fall looks like at Captain Nickels Inn. 🍁🤎

There is something pretty special about having family you can count on, especially when you own a family run business.

Back in February, my sister Michele came to Maine for 17 days to help us get the inn ready. We worked day and night, but somehow had a lot of fun along the way. We realized it was actually the first time in our lives that just the two of us had ever spent that much time alone together. In between all the work, we visited local restaurants, got to know people in the community, laughed a lot, and made some really great memories.

In May, she came back with our mom. Then in July, Michele returned again, this time with friends she has had since grammar school and high school, to celebrate all of them turning 60.

So when it came time to take Lexie to Duke, Tony and I weren’t sure we would both be able to go. Leaving the inn together for five days felt like a pretty big ask. We asked Michele if she would come be our innkeeper while we were gone, and without hesitation, she said yes.

And she absolutely rocked it.

Our staff raved about her. She took care of our guests and the inn as if it were her own. And because apparently innkeeping wasn’t enough, she brought our 84 year old dad along for the adventure too.

One thing owning Captain Nickels Inn has taught us is what a family run business really means. We have always been a close family, but this experience has given us an entirely new appreciation for it. Family shows up. They step in when you need them. They care about the inn because they know how much it means to us. They support us whether they are right here beside us or hundreds of miles away, and they always have our best interest at heart.

Because of my sister, Tony and I were both able to be there for one of the biggest moments in our lives as parents, taking our youngest to college and saying goodbye at Duke. I will always be grateful that she gave us that time.

Thank you, Michele. For February, for May, for July, and especially for these last days. We couldn’t have done it without you. 🩷

Sometimes you just happen to be standing in the right place at the right time. 🤍

Just before the ceremony, our bride walked over to the mirror for one last look before heading outside to be married. Then her little girl came over. Then her father joined her. And just as she turned to look back, I captured this.

Not posed. Not planned. Just one of those beautiful little moments that happens on a wedding day — and one I was so happy to witness at Captain Nickels Inn. 🤍

Sometimes the best vacation moments aren’t the ones you plan.

Three nights at the inn. A quiet afternoon on the front porch. A deck of cards. The sound of the bay in the distance.

These are the moments we hope our guests take home with them.

What’s your favorite way to slow down while you’re away?

Goodbyes are never easy. 🩷

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have all three of our children with us this summer, and now it’s time for our youngest, Lexie, to head home before beginning an exciting new chapter at Duke.

If you visited Captain Nickels Inn this summer, you may have seen Lexie helping around the property. Much of what she did happened behind the scenes, from cleaning rooms and running errands to helping with guest requests. She also made sure all of us were well fed, grocery shopping and cooking healthy dinners for our family after long days at the inn.

Having our kids here this summer has been such a gift, and we’re going to miss her more than words can say.

We are so proud of you, Lexie. Wishing you an amazing year at Duke. 💙

Breakfast this morning came with a show! What a lucky day it is!!!

This morning a couple of guests spotted a whale right in front of the property. When we went down we were blown away by how close and active it was! Our neighbor’s family has owned their property for many generations, but they said that this was their first time seeing a whale this close to our shoreline here on Penobscot Bay.

What species of whale do you think this is?

Some of our earliest guests this morning decided to claim the Adirondack chairs before breakfast. 🪿☕

According to Tony, they were just enjoying their morning coffee and taking in the view over Penobscot Bay before welcoming everyone else.

We can’t promise the geese will still be here when you arrive, but we can promise the same peaceful waterfront views.

Come spend a morning with us at Captain Nickels Inn. We think you’ll agree the locals have excellent taste. 🌊💙

We are absolutely in love with these floral arrangements from Sugarbush and Blooms Flowers! We always enjoy having fresh flowers displayed around the inn and these are some of our favorites yet. Such a nice touch that adds color and life throughout the inn. They are exactly the kind of details we wanted to have out for the wedding party currently staying with us!

Thank you Sugarbush & Blooms for putting so much care into these!
