This week, the Senate passed the Older Americans Act reauthorization, which includes portions of my bill, the Native ELDER Act.

Elders are the keepers of languages, cultures, traditions, and histories. They deserve the opportunity to age with dignity in their own communities. My bill helps make that possible by expanding in-home support, strengthening family caregiving, increasing Tribal capacity to deliver services, and ensuring Native voices help shape the Older Americans Act programs.

I’m proud to see this legislation advance and will keep working to ensure Native Elders have the support they deserve.

EPHESA agencies train for Seward Highway incidents

On Wednesday, Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department coordinated an EPHESA training event at Cooper Landing Emergency Services.

The training focused on motor vehicle accidents and related fires.

Cooper Landing Emergency Services is one of the participating agencies in the Eastern Peninsula Highway Emergency Service Area (EPHESA).

EPHESA is a specialized Fire & EMS Service Area within the Kenai Peninsula Borough (KPB) in Alaska. It was established to deliver consistent, coordinated fire protection and emergency medical services along the heavily traveled eastern peninsula highway corridor (primarily the Seward Highway).

EPHESA is a joint endeavor of Cooper Landing Emergency Services, Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Moose Pass Volunteer Fire Company, Seward Volunteer Fire Department, Lowell Point Volunteer Fire Department, Hope Volunteer Fire Department and Girdwood Fire and Rescue by the aegis of the Kenai Peninsula Borough

Administration and operations are funded by federal payments to the Kenai Peninsula Borough in lieu of taxes. These funds are rendered to compensate for the occupation of millions of acres by the U.S. Government that preempt development of a tax base.

Some of those monies are passed through to the EPHESA agencies, significantly contributing to their annual budgets.

Since its creation 9 years ago, EPHESA aims to continue increasing competency and decrease response times to EMS and Fire incidents along the Seward Highway Corridor on the Eastern Kenai Peninsula.

EPHESA is coordinated out of Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department by program administrator Chief Richard Brackin. It is governed under the KPB by the EPHESA Board.
