It’s not always the big sightings that stay with you.

Sometimes it’s the small, the subtle, the easily missed — like this Flap-necked chameleon, blending seamlessly into its world, yet captivating all who notice it.

For many travellers, these are the moments that surprise them most.

A reminder that the bush isn’t just one chapter — it’s an entire story waiting to be read.

Not all moments in the bush are filled with chaos.
Sometimes, they’re defined by calm.

After a successful hunt, this pack of African wild dogs lay scattered through the lush green grass, resting and digesting — completely at ease.

Then, something unexpected.
A pair of hyenas rose from nearby and walked straight past them.

No tension. No confrontation. Just quiet acceptance.
For a brief moment, two rival predators shared the same space in total peace — a rare reminder that the bush doesn’t always follow the rules we expect.

At first glance, just a muddy patch…
But look a little closer. 👀

This herd of elephants had found something special — a mineral-rich deposit seeping through the soil. One by one, they began scooping up the mud and eating it.

This behaviour is known as geophagia — feeding on soil to supplement essential minerals often missing from their diet.

A small, easily missed moment… but one that reveals just how in tune these animals are with their environment.

Something I’ve never seen before.
African wild dogs are famous for their cooperative nature, and serious fights between them are incredibly rare.
But on this sighting two males clashed over a female in heat — a brief but surprisingly physical encounter that caught all of us off guard.
After years of guiding and a lifetime in the bush, it was my first time witnessing wild dogs fight like this.

To sit quietly with our guests, just metres away from such powerful predators, watching them feed completely at ease in our presence, is something that never loses its sense of awe.
These are the moments that make a safari unforgettable.

Full Fat and Happy and Western Pride male rests and digests after feeding on one of the three buffalo kills made in the Eastern Klaserie this last week .

Nothing goes to waste in the African bush.

This was filmed the morning after the lions brought down a buffalo, and by sunrise the clean-up crew had already moved in.

A large clan of hyenas worked through what remained, their immense jaws crushing through bone with ease. Turn the sound up — that unmistakable crunch is the sound of one of nature’s most efficient recyclers at work.

But the story around this buffalo didn’t end with the kill.

Throughout the morning there was incredible movement around the carcass. Different lions arrived and were pushed off in turn — the Sark Pride got chased off by Western Pride males and River Pride females — all drawn to the same opportunity.

At one point even the 2 Giraffe pride young males appeared, only to be chased off again by the mowandana male and his sister. Then lion dynamics at this carcass were something that we have never experienced before.

Eventually, the hyenas took control, breaking down what remained and ensuring almost nothing went to waste.

Moments like this remind us how alive the bush truly is — one buffalo feeding an entire cast of predators, each playing their role in the wild rhythm of the Greater Kruger.
