A morning above the African bush

Crisp 05:30 AM air. The smell of fresh coffee beside a crackling fire. The low roar of the burners coming to life as the sun begins to rise.

A hot-air balloon experience isn’t just about getting off the ground it’s about watching the bushveld slowly wake up beneath you.

As you drift gently above the landscape, the first golden light sweeps across the horizon, revealing wildlife below and views stretching endlessly towards the Drakensberg mountains. Then, after landing, there’s the traditional champagne toast and a delicious lodge breakfast to finish off an unforgettable morning.

And this is exactly what we love about a Mad Safari stay.

Your 10-day safari is not a set itinerary. We don’t believe every group should experience the bush in exactly the same way.

We get to know the group we’re hosting and help plan experiences around your interests, your bucket list and the way you want to experience Africa.

From bush walks, wildlife experiences and scenic adventures to unforgettable extras like a hot-air balloon flight, there are so many ways to make your stay your own.

Your group. Your safari. Your adventure.

Come stay with us at Mad Safari Bush Camp and let’s create something you’ll still be talking about long after you’ve left the bush.

The Heart Beyond the Safari

It was around 2002 when the journey truly began. At the time, the area around Makushani had no formal roads, no real infrastructure, and virtually nothing in the way of basic services. Yet, during a drive through the rural landscape, a scene under the shade of a large tree changed everything: a local woman sat on the ground with about ten or fifteen children, diligently trying to teach them basic English. Her entire "kitchen" setup was nothing more than a borrowed shopping trolley from a SPAR.

Deeply moved by her dedication, weekly visits soon became a routine. Each trip brought simple joys, sweets, songs, and laughter shared under the branches. Recognizing a shared spirit, a representative from the Mandela Foundation introduced the initiative to the local chief. After an inspiring meeting, the chief officially granted a piece of land to build a dedicated space for the children.

The early days required pure resourcefulness. A JoJo water tank was secured to the back of a bakkie, filled, and hauled over rough terrain to establish a reliable water supply. Slowly but surely, over the next two decades, the vision took physical form.
Support began to grow from all over the world. International safari guests were invited to visit, offering them a perspective of South Africa that went far beyond the typical luxury lodge, fine wine, and Big Five sightings. They saw the heart of the real Africa. Many were moved to donate, directly funding the construction of a four-room facility decorated in vibrant Lego-inspired colors made possible by generous support from a Lego-affiliated organization. Additional classrooms were built as guest donations continued to pour in.

Naysayers had questioned the effort early on, warning of risks and doubts. But twenty-odd years later, those fears have been completely replaced by deep trust, warmth, and mutual respect. The preschool provides a safe haven for underprivileged children who previously faced long, dangerous journeys across rivers just to reach a distant school. By learning English early, these kids gain a fighting chance at future education and career opportunities.

Today, the preschool thrives, supporting dozens of young learners with a goal to grow back to a hundred as new roofing and building projects wrap up. Every year, the children are equipped with brand-new school bags and supplies purchased locally to support community businesses, preparing them for their transition into primary school.

For the international guests who visit whether they are enjoying a boat cruise safari or sharing a traditional meal in the boma under a clear, calm sky the visit to the preschool remains the highlight of their trip. It serves as a lasting reminder that true hospitality is about giving back, making a difference, and leaving a positive footprint in the heart of the community.
