A mandatory evacuation order remains in effect for visitors on Hatteras Island. If you have not already evacuated, now is the time to leave before weather conditions deteriorate and N.C. Highway 12 becomes unsafe for travel.
A developing coastal nor’easter is expected to bring worsening conditions, prolonged coastal flooding and repeated ocean overwash that could close N.C. Highway 12 for an extended period, cutting off roadway access to and from Hatteras Island.
The evacuation order applies to visitors in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. No evacuation has been ordered for Hatteras Island residents or areas north of Oregon Inlet.
Visitors should follow departure instructions from their accommodations provider and take all personal belongings. Do not travel toward Hatteras Island while the evacuation order is in effect. Entry checkpoints are in place.
