Jefferson Texas was a bustling town in the 1800s. When you visit today you get a glimpse of what was. Jefferson is rich in history. Come visit and enjoy the place we now call home.

In the 1870s, Jefferson, Texas was one of the busiest inland ports in the entire state, with steamboats crowding the docks along Big Cypress Bayou almost every single day. ๐Ÿšข

Cotton, timber, and goods of every kind moved through Jefferson on their way to New Orleans, and the town grew wealthy and confident enough to assume the railroads would eventually come straight through too. They didn't. When the Texas and Pacific Railway chose a route that bypassed Jefferson entirely, the town's steamboat economy collapsed almost overnight, and growth simply stopped.

What Jefferson lost in commerce, it somehow kept in character. The same antebellum brick storefronts and cast iron balconies that lined the bayou during the steamboat era are still standing today, mostly untouched by the kind of development that reshaped busier Texas towns. The water that once churned with paddlewheel traffic now sits still enough to reflect them perfectly. ๐ŸŒฟ

Do you think Jefferson would still look the way it does today if the railroad had actually come through?
