One of the pioneers of South Africaโ€™s backpacking industry, Lisa started Ashanti Lodge more than three decades ago, drawing on her own extensive travels and invaluable insight into what makes a great hostel. She was a founding member of Backpacking South Africa and co-founded the Tourism Community Development Trust, helping champion the positive role tourism can play in communities. Although both organisations have since closed, Lisaโ€™s commitment to the industry continues through advice and mentorship to young people in travel, while Ashanti continues to contribute to sustainable projects. ๐ŸŒฟ

Today, her focus is firmly on Ashanti Gardens Guesthouse โ€” ensuring that guests experience a top-notch stay, while she continues to treasure one of the greatest joys of hospitality: meeting interesting people from all over the world. When asked what Womenโ€™s Month means to her, Lisa simply describes it as a time to recognise the contribution women make to society. And her advice to young women entering hospitality? โ€œDo it!
