There’s nothing quite like sitting quietly and waiting to see who visits the waterhole during the midday heat. Today, it started with a lone scout—the iconic Grey Go-away-bird (Grey Loerie).

While they’re famous for shouting their loud warnings to alert the entire bush of danger, they also have a highly social, playful side. Where there is one, the rest of the family is never far behind!

Visiting the waterhole in a group is a brilliant survival strategy. With plenty of eyes on the lookout for predators, they can finally let their crests down, splash around, and wash off the thick Limpopo dust.

While frequently spotted darting up tree trunks around Hoedspruit, there is far more to these fascinating 200-gram rodents than meets the eye. Also known as the Tree Squirrel (Paraxerus cepapi), they possess remarkable survival adaptations that intrigue wildlife enthusiasts and safari guides alike:

• Vertical Agility: Thanks to highly flexible, rotating ankle joints, they can sprint straight down vertical tree trunks headfirst with incredible speed.

• Communal Defence: When threatened by predators like snakes or raptors, family groups band together to “mob” the intruder, using coordinated chattering and mock charges to drive them away.

• The Shared Scent: They live in tight-knit social structures where family members share a unique group scent. Any outsider lacking this identifier is promptly defended against and evicted.

It starts as a perfectly bright and sunny day at the waterhole, but out here, peace is a high-stakes game of mutual trust.

Watch closely and you’ll see a brilliant example of bushveld teamwork. Our first arrivals, a flock of helmeted guineafowl, are the ultimate ground-level security—hyper-reactive, twitchy, and ready to trigger a chaotic, noisy alarm at the slightest rustle in the grass.

But because they lack the height to see over the brush, they need a partner. Right on cue at the heavy security arrives: a group of magnificent impala rams. Bringing the height, sharp eyesight, and impressive horns, they effortlessly scan the horizon. By sharing the space, they split the burden of vigilance. One drinks, one watches, and everyone makes it home safely.

It’s a daily reminder that in this wild ecosystem, teamwork and collaboration aren’t just choices—they are survival strategies.

While the lodge sleeps, our waterhole comes alive! One of our favourite nocturnal visitors to The Baobab Bush Lodge is the striking Large-spotted Genet. 🐾

Think it’s a cat? Look closer! Despite those feline eyes and leopard-like spots, these agile creatures are closely related to mongooses and civets. They are the ultimate midnight acrobats, using their massive, striped tails like a balancing pole to effortlessly navigate the branches and drop down for a quick drink.

They enjoy an omnivorous diet consuming anything from mice and reptiles to wild fruit and seeds

We are so excited to share A Season with the Porcupines, the latest chapter in our Waterhole Diaries. For the past few months, our cameras have been capturing the secret lives of Hoedspruit’s most prickly residents. From quiet midnight drinks to playful family foraging, it has been an incredible, unfiltered look into the rhythms of the bush.

These fascinating nocturnal animals play a vital role in our ecosystem—and watching them thrive right on our doorstep has been an absolute highlight of the season.
