We are just the audience in a theatre where the script changes daily.
The backdrop is always familiar, but the characters change from one day to the next. Sometimes the scenes we witness are happy ones; other times, they are far more distressing.
Over the past two days, we have watched this young lioness, possibly only five months old, calling desperately for the rest of her family. She became separated from the pride a couple of days ago and has remained in the same area, seemingly hoping they will return to find her.
So far, we have seen no sign of the pride, and we simply don't know if, or when, they might be reunited.
Lion cubs face countless challenges as they grow up, and mortality is generally high. Her greatest threat right now is starvation. At such a young age, she is still too small and inexperienced to hunt for herself, leaving her entirely dependent on the adults.
She is also vulnerable to other predators should they come across her. To make matters worse, we have a couple of cold, wet days forecast.
For now, her best hope is to find shelter from the rain and conserve what little energy she has, while continuing to call in the hope that somewhere nearby, the adults of her pride can hear her.
All we can do is watch and hope that the next scene in this ever-changing theatre has a happier.
