Thank you to everyone who joined us at the ExecSpace Summer Office Party last week, there was definitely a summer vibe!☀️

For many of us in the hospitality industry, this represents the end of the busiest month in Scotland. It was fantastic to say cheers to a great month and spend the evening catching up with so many of our valued hotel partners, suppliers and industry friends. Events like these are a great reminder of just how important the relationships we build across our industry really are.

To everyone who came along, thank you for your continued support, partnership and friendship. We genuinely couldn't do what we do without you, and we're incredibly grateful to work alongside such a brilliant network of people.

We hope you all had a fantastic evening, and here's to doing it all again next year!

A first for the UK!

The ExecSpace team were delighted to be among the first to visit the newly opened MEININGER Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket. Well established in Europe, this is the first MEININGER hotel in the UK.

Located just a short walk from Haymarket Station and tram stop, the hotel is ideally placed for anyone travelling into Edinburgh, with easy connections across the city and to Edinburgh Airport.

It's also within easy reach of some of the city's key meeting and conference venues, making it an interesting new option for budget conscious accommodation groups and business travellers.

With 157 rooms and 549 beds, along with shared spaces including a bar, lounge and guest kitchen and laundry, there's plenty to recommend at this new addition to Edinburgh's hotel scene.

Thank you to the team for welcoming us, we're looking forward to getting to know the hotel and working with the team on group enquiries!

Love them or hate them... let's talk icebreakers! 🧊 Do they still have a place in your current meetings?

Whether it's sharing a fun fact, finding someone with the same hobby, or the classic "post it on your forehead!", icebreakers have been a staple of meetings, conferences and team events for years.

Many meeting planners and trainers have their favourites and they can be a great way to get conversations flowing and help people feel more comfortable in new surroundings and connecting with fellow delegates. Others would happily skip straight to the coffee break!

At ExecSpace, we know every event is different, and the best icebreakers are the ones that suit the audience and feel natural rather than forced.

We asked some expert friends of ExecSpace to comment… Andy Williamson, Founder of Welcome Brain and an advocate for accommodating Neurodiversity in meetings said: "Our research at Welcome Brain found that 73% of people—both neurotypical and neurodivergent—dislike networking that's simply unstructured mingling. Icebreakers can be a fantastic way to provide a little more structure, but it's important they're designed thoughtfully. Rather than putting people on the spot, simple conversation cards placed around the room with prompts like 'What's the worst film you've ever seen?' or 'If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?' can help conversations start naturally and lead to genuine, meaningful connections. Most importantly, give people the choice of whether to use them or not. That flexibility and personalisation are at the heart of truly neuroinclusive networking."

Rebecca Maxwell, Director and Perception Insights training commented: “Icebreakers can be ‘marmite’ but often that's because they're not well thought through. Perception Insights uses icebreakers intentionally - to introduce participants to each other so they understand the context of everyone's comments, to make networking easier, or to build trust in the room. We're also big believers in re-energisers on full day sessions, to keep attention focused and energy levels from dropping - especially straight after lunch! Our advice to meeting planners? If you're going to use them, make them have a purpose beyond just ticking a box on the event checklist.”

Do you still use icebreakers at your events? And if you've got a favourite, we'd love to hear it in the comments.

Thank you to the team at Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh by The Unlimited Collection for taking the time out of their busy August festival season to show the ExecSpace team their beautiful new Eidyn Restaurant.

Sitting right on Princes Street, Eidyn is a fantastic spot to unwind while taking in some of Edinburgh City Centre stunning views, overlooking Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Monument. With windows all the way along the restaurant and bar, pretty much every table has a view!

The team were treated to a sampling session of their new menu items and cocktails, we especially liked the Baby Potted Vegetables in Hummus and edible soil and the Cauliflower Fritters!

It was great to experience the new space and to be able to update our customers on new venues for them to try out for their events. Whether you're catching up with colleagues, entertaining clients or celebrating a special occasion, it's easy to see why Eidyn is becoming a great addition to Edinburgh's hospitality scene.

A huge thank you again to the team for the warm welcome and Scottish hospitality!

Thank you to the team from Malmaison and Hotel du Vin for visiting the ExecSpace offices recently! 👏

It was fantastic to hear about the continued investment across so many of their hotels, from refreshed spaces and relaunched food and beverage offerings to specially curated corporate retreat packages.

Designed with team gatherings, strategy sessions and planning days in mind, it's exciting to see even more options becoming available for businesses looking to bring people together, outside a traditional boardroom setting. Having previously experienced a champagne tasting session in the wine cellars at One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow and just the best non alcoholic Cosmopolitan cocktail, we would recommend experiencing one of the hotels for yourself!

With hotels from Brighton to Aberdeen, we look forward to assisting customers find the right Malmaison or Hotel du Vin for your event.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is almost here!

For a few weeks every August, the city comes alive with performers, visitors and industry professionals from across the world, turning Edinburgh into one of the most exciting places to be for culture, creativity and connection.

As an Edinburgh-based business working across the events industry, we love seeing the city showcase its incredible venues, hospitality and the people who help make these experiences happen.

With so much to choose from, we asked the ExecSpace team for their Fringe favourites and recommendations this year...

👉 Georgia’s pick: For a relaxed Fringe night, Georgia recommends catching a comedy show such as Nish Kumar or Phil Wang. If you can’t decide what to see, Fast Fringe is a great option with 12 hand-picked comedy artists in one show. Afterwards, grab a pizza slice from Civerinos before heading to Paradise Palms for a Margarita!

👉 Ellie & Gemma’s picks: For something a little more adventurous, Ellie and Gemma are looking forward to Trainspotting (their third time seeing it!), as well as Disenchanted, Sh!tfaced Shakespeare, Diva’s and comedy from Susie McCabe and Craig Hill.

👉 Their food and drink favourites: The Basement, Ting Thai Caravan, Edinburgh Street Food, Chaophraya and Topolabamba are all on the list for a great meal or pre-show bite.

Here’s to another fantastic Fringe season and to everyone helping make Edinburgh such a brilliant destination for events, experiences and visitors from around the world.

What are you planning to see at this year’s Fringe?

The Edinburgh Visitor Levy is now officially started (24th July), marking a significant change for accommodation bookings across the city.

For anyone organising conferences, meetings, accommodation groups or business events in Edinburgh, as well as individual travellers, this will mean an additional 5% fee onto the net price of your bedroom, for up to 5 nights.

The good news is, ExecSpace team has already been working with hotel partners to help customers and event planners navigate these changes for many months! We've been working closely with Edinburgh's hotels to ensure contracts, pricing and booking processes are managed correctly, helping our clients process these changes with confidence. Whether the levy needs to be included in upfront payments or paid directly by delegates at the hotel, we'll guide you through the process and make sure everything is handled correctly.

As always, our focus is on securing the best value for our clients while making the booking process as straightforward as possible, leaving you free to focus on delivering a successful event.

If you're planning an event or accommodation group in Edinburgh and have any questions about how the Visitor Levy may affect your booking, our team would be happy to help.
