Spooky season has some eight-legged help in Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos. 🕷️🍂

Every fall, male tarantulas leave their burrows and wander the Four Corners in search of a mate. If you spot one crossing a trail, a back road, or your driveway, you’re witnessing one of nature’s quieter migrations.

Here’s the thing: these gentle giants are far more delicate than their reputation suggests. They’re shy, they’d rather be left alone, and they are not out to hurt anyone. They’re just on a very important mission.

So if you see one, give it space, admire from a distance, and let it keep moving. Please don’t pick it up or poke at it, and if you’re driving on a country road, keep an eye out so they can safely make it across. A little respect goes a long way. 💛

Mesa Verde National Park is an International Dark Sky Park, which means the night skies here are protected and preserved. On a clear night, you can see a sky full of stars, the Milky Way stretching overhead, and a darkness that’s getting harder to find.

Fall is a wonderful time to see it. Cooler air, crisp evenings, and earlier sunsets mean you don’t have to stay up late to catch the show.

And you don’t have to be inside the park to enjoy it. Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos all offer dark, open skies just beyond the town lights, so you can book a stay, step outside after dinner, and find yourself under more stars than you knew were there.

There’s something special about it, too. With so little light pollution here, the night sky above Mesa Verde Country is about as close as you can get to the one the Ancestral Puebloans looked up at centuries ago. The same stars. The same quiet. A reminder that people have been gazing up in wonder in this place for a very long time.

Bring a blanket, a warm layer, and a little patience while your eyes adjust. 🌌
