💕 We recently welcomed a beautiful young couple from Brazil, celebrating their honeymoon at Motswari. Already madly in love with each other, they were about to fall in love all over again. This time, with Africa’s beating wild heart.

And really, going on safari for the first time is a lot like falling in love.

The butterflies. The rush of adrenaline as an elephant walks so close you can hear him breathing. The dopamine-fuelled delight of discovering something extraordinary around the corner.

Every sunrise is a new adventure. Every game drive a new date with the wild. And just when you think it couldn’t possibly get any better, Africa finds another way to leave footprints in your heart so you’ll always come back. 💕

📖 FIFTY YEARS OF MOTSWARI ✨ THE WHITE LIONS - THE MYTH THAT WALKS AMONG US

For decades, whispers drifted through the bush. Did ghost-like lions truly roam the Timbavati, or were they merely the stuff of fireside legend?

In 1975, zoologist Chris McBride witnessed something extraordinary: a tawny lioness with three cubs, two of them pure white.

That same year, Motswari was purchased with a vision of becoming a safari lodge. Two remarkable stories were beginning to unfold in the same wilderness.

For the local Shangaan people, encountering a white lion is considered a miracle. Revered as sacred animals and messengers of the gods, these magnificent creatures are believed to have been sent to Earth to bring balance and harmony.

But there is science behind the mystery.

White lions are not albinos. Their extraordinary colouring comes from a rare recessive gene, which both parents must carry. Even when two carriers mate, there is only a 25% chance of producing a white cub.

In 1981, a white lioness named Wh**ey was born in the Timbavati. She survived to become a mother and skilled hunter, earning her place in the reserve’s history.

And in early 2026, as Motswari celebrated its 50th anniversary, another miracle arrived: the first white lion born in the Timbavati in more than a decade.

A little male cub, pale as morning mist against the African earth.

The odds of any lion cub reaching adulthood are only around one in five. For a white lion, without the advantage of natural camouflage, the challenges are even greater.

Yet they endure.

Their survival is a testament to the importance of protecting vast, connected wilderness, where nature is free to follow its own extraordinary course.

Some artists paint what they see. Others paint what they feel.

For Marion Geiger, the wilderness has always been both canvas and inspiration.

Growing up surrounded by the rhythms of the Timbavati, she developed a deep connection to the natural world. Its shifting light, restless energy and quiet beauty continue to find expression in her art.

Her creative journey has taken her across continents, from lecturing in Cape Town to the Chicago Academy for the Arts. Yet the wilderness remains her greatest muse.

Today, Marion has two studios. One in Cape Town, the other at Motswari.

Often, her paintings begin not with a brush, but with a moment in nature. An encounter with wildlife. A movement. A feeling. A fleeting impression captured in a sketch.

Back in her studio, these moments become what she calls “painting conversations with nature.”

But perhaps Marion’s most enduring work of art is Motswari itself.

Her creativity is woven into the very fabric of the lodge, from the original paintings adorning its walls, to the thoughtful details that make guests feel at home.

And beyond the art, there is something even more meaningful.

Her love for us, the people of Motswari.

“People often ask what it takes to lead a life like mine,” she reflects. “They might expect a degree in hospitality or business management, but the truth is simpler: it takes a strong and big heart.”

Fifty years of Motswari is a story of family, wilderness, and generations of people whose love and dedication have shaped the soul of this extraordinary place.

And Marion continues to honour that legacy, not only through the art she creates, but through the lives she touches and the wild she protects.

📖 FIFTY YEARS OF MOTSWARI ✨ Roland Geiger — Freedom in an Endless Sky

For Roland Geiger, the Timbavati was freedom.

It began with bicycles, often with his younger sister Marion perched on the back, and progressed to scramblers splashing through river crossings after summer rains. Rules were fewer then. People were fewer still. His childhood was shaped by space, adventure and a wilderness that felt endless.

That love of freedom eventually carried him into the sky.

Supported by parents Paul and Med, Roland learned to fly a Cessna. From above, the Timbavati revealed itself in full: its veins of water, its scars from drought and fire, its hidden pathways etched by generations of animals.

In 1990, Paul handed operational leadership of Motswari to Roland, marking the transition to a second generation. Under his guidance, the lodge continued to evolve, grounded in family values and carried forward with youthful vision.

Roland and his partner Roxy shared a life shaped by flight, family and the bush. Two pilots in love. Two people held by the wild.

Tragically, in 1998, Roland lost his life in a light aircraft accident in Kenya. His passing devastated the Geiger family and the extended Motswari family, whose loyalty and support helped carry them through their grief.

Yet Roland’s spirit remains woven into Motswari’s story. In the skies above the reserve, in the freedom of open landscapes, and in the family legacy he helped carry forward.

Some lives are measured not by their length, but by the lift they give to others.

Even the King of the Jungle can be ruffled by small little things.

Handsome and majestic, but unfortunately, the flies have absolutely no respect for royalty.

A vigorous shake of the head. A moment of peace. And then the little tormentors return.

It’s tough being king. Especially when your subjects won’t leave you alone.

But wow, what a glorious mane.

Some of our loveliest visitors at Motswari don’t need a reservation.

This beautiful female bushbuck is a familiar face around camp, reminding us that here in the heart of the Timbavati, we are the guests in their world.

Bushbuck are naturally shy, solitary antelope, preferring the shelter of dense vegetation. But this lovely lady seems perfectly at ease, taking a leisurely stroll past the rooms and going about her day without a care in the world.

And that’s one of the quieter joys of Motswari. Living alongside wildlife, where even the simplest encounters remind us how fortunate we are to share this little corner of the wild. 💚
