Lion vs Rhino: Who is the real King of the Jungle? 🦁🦏

We approached a small pride of lions, only to discover they weren’t alone. Just beyond them, partially hidden in the bushes, was a crash of rhinos.

The lions spotted them first, and curiosity soon got the better of one of them.

Then the rhinos came down to drink.

Their eyesight may not be great, but their sense of smell certainly is. They knew the lions were there.

For a few tense moments, two of Africa’s most formidable animals sized each other up.

So who backed down first?

Watch to the end to find out. 👀

Fifty years of Motswari. And still, there are first times. ✨

During our 50th year, we had the joy of welcoming New Zealand Māori soul singer Teeks to experience the wild for the very first time this week.

There was something beautifully fitting about it. First Time was Teeks’ breakout single in South Africa - and Motswari became the place for a whole new collection of firsts.

His first safari. His first encounters with some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife. His first nights beneath the stars of the Timbavati. His first dance with the Motswari choir :-)

For 50 years, Motswari has been a place where people come to experience the wonder of the wild. We loved seeing it anew through the eyes of such an exceptional artist.

Thanks very much to Clare Greenwood who sent us some of her wonderful photos from her trip to Motswari earlier this year….

We stayed at Motswari for my 60th birthday and it was a totally memorable experience. Guide Rudolph and tracker George were amazing at getting us close to so many animals, particularly the beautiful leopards.

Everything about Motswari was fantastic, we’d love to come back!

Sometimes it’s not about the big things, but rather those precious moments that make you stop and stare.

A magnificent kudu bull, carrying a lifetime in those great spiralling horns, quietly walks into the sunset.

Motswari magic.

One year ago today, we said goodbye to the original matriarch of Motswari, Mechthild Geiger.

A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Med dedicated fifty years of her life to helping make Motswari a haven of peace for people and wildlife alike — a place to come together, to share, and to live in harmony with the wilderness.

She had a deep love for the bush and the people who shared it with her, and our guides especially loved it when she honoured them by joining their vehicle for a game drive.

Her presence is deeply woven into the story and spirit of Motswari.

Today, on the first anniversary of her passing, we celebrate Med with love and gratitude - for the life she lived, the family she nurtured, and the extraordinary legacy she helped create.

Waiting for our guests to return from afternoon drive…

After record rains in January, the riverbed in front of Motswari is still holding water in the dry season. A precious gift in the bush, and mesmerising with the setting sun and rising calls of the wild.

There are two kinds of reflections on safari: those mirrored in the water, and those that stay with you long after you leave.

The kind that quiets the mind, restores the body and stirs the soul.

Buffalo have a reputation for being among Africa’s most dangerous and famously grumpy animals, but there is another side to these formidable characters.

As you can see here, this large breeding herd were cautious and aware of our presence, but mostly relaxed around the vehicle.

Breeding herds are made up largely of females and their young, with bulls moving in and out of the herd. There is safety in numbers, and the adults are fiercely protective of the calves, particularly when predators are nearby.

Powerful, watchful and deeply connected to the herd, there is more to buffalo than their reputation suggests.

Munch…munch…munch…rhinos living their best life in the Timbavati. Sometimes they don’t even notice we’re there.

We are so proud of Timbavati anti poaching for keeping this incredible, endangered species safe.
