🦌 Small in Size, BIG on Personality! Meet the Steenbok! 🌿

Don't let those big ears and adorable eyes fool you… this little antelope is a true bushveld survivor! 😍

The Steenbok is one of Southern Africa's smallest antelope species, standing at around 45–60 cm at the shoulder. But what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in clever survival skills!

🌾 Did you know?

👀 Always alert! Those large ears aren't just for show. They help the steenbok detect potential danger in its surroundings.

🏃 A master of hide-and-seek! When threatened, a steenbok often freezes low to the ground, relying on its reddish-brown coat to blend into the dry grass and bush. If danger gets too close, it can take off at impressive speed!

🥬 Not just a grass eater! Unlike many larger antelope, steenbok mainly browse on leaves, shoots, flowers, and fruits, and they may even dig up roots and bulbs.

💧 Water-wise! They obtain much of their moisture from the food they eat, helping them survive in dry environments.

💑 Independent little souls! Steenbok are generally solitary, with adults usually living alone or in pairs rather than in large herds.

🖤🤍 A Striking Beauty of the African Wetlands! 🤍🖤

With its bold black-and-white plumage, elegant stature, and unmistakable red bill, the Saddle-billed Stork is one of Africa’s most magnificent wading birds! 🪶✨

Standing tall in the shallows, this impressive bird is a masterful hunter, patiently searching for fish, frogs, crabs, and other small aquatic creatures. Its long legs allow it to wade through shallow water with ease, while its powerful bill helps it catch its next meal.

Did you know? 🤔 The Saddle-billed Stork is one of the tallest storks in the world, reaching heights of up to 1.5 meters! The female typically has golden-yellow eyes, while the male has dark eyes — a fascinating way to tell them apart.

Every sighting is a beautiful reminder of the incredible diversity of wildlife that makes the African bush so special. 🌿🦩

💙❤️ Meet the Bush’s Blue-Headed Rockstar! 🐦🎸

With a bright blue head, bold red wattles and a fabulous set of “locks,” the Helmeted Guineafowl certainly didn’t come to the bush to blend in! 😂

These quirky birds may look like they’ve spent a little too much time at the hairdresser, but their colorful headgear is completely natural — and definitely one of the reasons they’re so easy to recognize.

Guineafowl are wonderfully social and are often seen marching around in noisy groups, scratching through the soil in search of seeds, insects and other tasty treats. And when one spots danger? Everyone knows about it! Their loud calls can turn a peaceful bushveld morning into a full-blown neighbourhood announcement. 📣🌿

At Leopard’s Bend, we love these little characters — because the bush wouldn’t be quite the same without their hilarious personalities and unmistakable blue heads and red locks! 💙❤️

✨ BUSHVELD GARNERIA — A LITTLE BEAUTY OF THE BUSHVELD ✨🌿

Hidden among the greenery of the bushveld, the Bushveld Garneria (Dovyalis zeyheri) is a beautiful indigenous shrub or small tree that often goes unnoticed — until it bursts into fruit! 🌱🧡

Its small, inconspicuous flowers give way to round, yellowish-orange fruits that ripen in the warmer months. These juicy fruits are an important food source for a variety of wildlife, helping to keep the bushveld's natural food web thriving. 🐒🐦🦌

And there's a little surprise hiding among those branches… the plant can have thorns! 🌿👀 A useful reminder that in the bush, beauty often comes with a little protection.

From flowers and fruits to thorns and wildlife interactions, every indigenous plant plays a role in the ecosystem — even the ones we might walk past without noticing. 🌍💚

🦉🌙 WHO’S WATCHING FROM THE TREES? 👀

Meet the Spotted Eagle-Owl — one of the bushveld’s most recognizable night-time characters!

With those incredible dark eyes, fluffy ear tufts and beautifully spotted feathers, they’re perfectly equipped for life after sunset. 🌙✨ Their excellent hearing helps them locate prey in the darkness, while their silent flight lets them swoop in almost unnoticed.

🌿🧡 A LITTLE PLANT WITH A BIG REPUTATION!

Have you ever spotted this unusual-looking plant growing in the bushveld? Meet the Burn Jelly Plant, also known as the Orange-stalked Bulbine (Bulbine frutescens). 🌱

With its long, fleshy leaves and striking orange flower stalks, it’s a beautiful and useful little survivor of the South African landscape.

The name “Burn Jelly” comes from the clear, gel-like sap found inside its leaves. Traditionally, this gel has been used topically to soothe minor burns, insect bites, rashes and skin irritations — much like aloe vera. 🧡

But there’s more! The bright yellow-to-orange flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinators, making bulbine a wonderful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden. 🐝🦋

So next time you see those cheerful orange flower stalks at Leopard’s Bend, take a closer look — this unassuming little plant is another fascinating example of how much the African bush has to offer. 🌿🐆

🌈🐦 WHO WORE IT BEST? 💜💙🩵

Meet the Lilac-breasted Roller — quite possibly one of the bushveld’s most colourful residents! 😍

With a lilac breast, turquoise wings, a blue crown and a splash of warm brown, this little bird looks like it was painted by an artist who simply couldn’t stop adding colour. 🎨

But there’s more to this beauty than its fabulous feathers! Lilac-breasted rollers are excellent hunters, swooping down from a perch to catch insects, lizards, scorpions and even small birds.

And when they’re showing off in flight, those brilliant blue wings really steal the show! 💙✨

Meet the Scotia tree (Schotia Brachypetala/ Weeping Boer-Bean) — a beautiful African tree that knows how to make an entrance! 🌿✨

When it bursts into bloom, its clusters of striking red to scarlet flowers bring a spectacular splash of colour to the bushveld. ❤️🌺

But these flowers aren’t just beautiful — they’re an important food source for nectar-loving birds and insects, turning the tree into a busy little feeding station when it’s in flower. 🐦🐝

The Scotia is also known for its distinctive swollen trunk and spreading branches, making it a wonderful shade tree and a memorable part of the African landscape.
