Serondella - meaning Place of Elephants - is a 5 Star family-orientated boutique safari lodge in the Greater Kruger Park, newly reinvented and overlooking one of the most active waterholes in Thornybush Nature Reserve.

The Serondella Waterhole can get a little crowded...

This particular group of elephants clearly felt the warthogs were taking up more space than they were entitled to, and made several attempts to send them on their way.

The warthogs ran, but not far enough for the elephants’ liking. After a few more attempts, the elephants eventually moved off.

And the warthogs went straight back to drinking.

There is a language to the wild.

Written in tracks across the road. In the direction a lioness is watching. In the distance between a male and the rest of the pride. In the way cubs follow, play, disappear and return. Spend enough time here and you begin to recognise it.

A movement means something. A silence means something. Even a lion disappearing into the grass can leave you wondering what comes next.

Safari is, in part, learning to listen to all of it.

An inside look at Willem’s Den

You’ve heard of Africa’s Big Five. But how well do you know the Little Five?

They may be smaller, but there’s plenty to discover. The elephant shrew, buffalo weaver, leopard tortoise, antlion and rhinoceros beetle each have a connection to one of Africa’s most iconic animals, and each has a story of its own.

Lunch by the pool? Absolutely.

At Serondella, your day is yours to enjoy however you please. If that means taking a dip before lunch, settling in beside the pool with a fresh plate from the kitchen, and letting our team look after you while you enjoy the afternoon, that sounds pretty good to us.

If you had been watching the waterhole from your room or the deck that afternoon, you might have found it difficult to look away.

We’re always grateful for the way winter brings the animals to the water, and for moments like these, when there’s always another reason to keep watching.

At Serondella, the wild is never far away.

It moves beyond the waterhole, through the trees, past the pool and into the spaces between breakfast and dinner.

There are quiet mornings and long lunches, elephants appearing in the distance, and the simple pleasure of having somewhere beautiful to return to after a day spent exploring.

A place to experience the bush, without ever feeling removed from it.

This male cheetah has been spending some time in the Serondella area lately.

Our guides have been keeping an eye out for him, and enjoying every opportunity to spend a little time in his company. We’re hoping he sticks around for a while.
